From the 11th century AD onwards, characteristic elements of the old Celtic beliefs started to merge with those of the new religion of the first evangelists. The fusion of these beliefs is visible in the Celtic crosses, and has great symbolic importance. The circles symbolise the sun, the worship of the stars and the wheel of life while the cross represents Christ and the meeting of the heavens with the earth. Occasionally, these crosses were carved directly from prehistoric menhirs which lay on sites of great magical significance and earthly power.
